The north–south split is the whole trick

Every other Goa package we looked at parks you in Calangute for four nights. Two and two meant we got the markets and the cruise and then two days of Palolem where the beach was basically empty. The scooter being included from day two saved us a fortune in taxis.

Seeing the aarti from the water changes it

I have been to Varanasi four times and always watched the aarti from the steps, wedged in. From a boat it is a completely different experience. Our guide was a Banarasi who took us through lanes I would never have found and fed us at three places I will be going back to.

Kanchenjunga at 05:12, and then the tea

Tiger Hill delivered — clear sky, the whole massif turning gold. But the part I did not expect to love was the Happy Valley walk. A proper estate tour with a tasting, not fifteen minutes and a gift shop. Both Sikkim permits were handled before we arrived and the vehicle changeover at Rangpo took twenty minutes exactly as described.

Four generations, nobody complained once

We travelled with my mother-in-law who is 79 and my daughter who is six. Every hotel had a lift, no drive was over four hours, and the Jain food was confirmed at each property before we arrived — I did not have to explain it once. The houseboat was the whole trip for the children.

Tsomgo in October was extraordinary

Half frozen at the edges and the sky reflecting off the rest of it. Worth the altitude headache. One tip: take the yak ride if you have children, skip it otherwise. The Rumtek morning was serene.

Mana village was the unexpected highlight

You go for the four dhams and come back talking about Mana. Vyas Gufa and the Saraswati emerging from under the rock — nobody had told us about any of it. Our driver had been on this route for nine seasons and it showed on the Uttarkashi–Guptkashi day.

Perfect long weekend

Left Friday night, back Monday morning, and did a 16 km river run and a cliff rappel in between. The safety briefing was thorough and the guides were properly certified — I asked to see it, they showed me without blinking. Camp was on the river, not near it.

The Shyok road, and a night at Pangong

Rough is an understatement and I would do it again tomorrow. Waking up beside Pangong at 4,250 m with the lake going from navy to turquoise as the sun came over — that is the photograph that does not do it justice. Oxygen in the car, a driver who checked on everyone. Felt safe throughout.

They made us rest on day one and they were right

I argued about it. I had two friends on a different operator's trip who started sightseeing the afternoon they landed, and both of them spent day three on oxygen in Leh. Two full acclimatisation days is not padding, it is the difference between doing this trip and not. Turtuk was unlike anywhere I have been in India.

Eleven days, and we were never rushed

My parents are both over seventy and this was the first Char Dham itinerary we found that did not try to do it in eight days. The short driving day to Uttarkashi was a gift. We lost half a day to a landslide near Rudraprayag and it did not derail anything, because the buffer was already there.

The Guptkashi night made all the difference

I am 58 and had written the trek off before this trip. Spending a night at Guptkashi before the climb was the single thing that made it possible — I walked the full 16 km without a pony. Registration was done before we reached Sonprayag, which saved us most of a morning. Do not book the version of this trip that skips the acclimatisation night.

Private, and actually private

Our own car, our own shikara, and the houseboat cabin rather than a room in a block. The sandbank—sorry, sunset shikara—with nobody else on the water at that hour is the memory. Room décor was waiting when we arrived and nobody tried to upsell us anything the entire trip.

Darshan at first light, exactly as promised

We were at the temple by 05:40 and there was almost no queue. By the time we came out at seven the line went halfway down the hill. The team were honest about the helicopter — they told us the Phata weather was not worth betting on, and they were right, the flights were cancelled that day.

Old Manali was the right call

We nearly asked to be moved to a Mall Road hotel and I am so glad we did not. Walking back from the cafés along the river every evening was the best part of the holiday. The 06:30 start for the Atal Tunnel felt brutal at the time and completely correct by 09:00 when we saw the queue behind us.

Gulmarg phase two was running and it was worth it

They checked and told us the day before, which meant we knew to carry proper gloves. Apharwat at 3,979 m in late April with snow still lying — extraordinary. The drive from Gulmarg to Pahalgam through the saffron fields is long but do not let anyone talk you into flying it.

Speedboat over seaplane, every time

We landed at 19:00 and were in the villa by 20:15. Friends on a seaplane resort waited until the next morning. Honest pricing too — they told us upfront what the alcohol would cost rather than letting us find out at checkout.

Bharatpur reef at 07:00 with nobody else in the water

Neil Island is quieter than Havelock and Bharatpur before breakfast was the best snorkelling of my life. The Cellular Jail show on the first night set the whole trip up properly — go in knowing nothing and let it tell you.

Three nights on Havelock, not one

This is the thing to look for when comparing Andaman packages. Most give Havelock a single night and you spend the holiday on ferries. Three nights meant we saw Radhanagar at sunset twice and did Elephant Beach without watching the clock. Private catamarans throughout — we never queued.
