We were through the Sheesh Mahal before the first coach party arrived. By ten it was unrecognisable. Udaipur was deliberately quiet which after Jaipur is exactly what you want. The Ranakpur stop adds two hours to a long day — take it anyway.

Five hours on the toy train is lovely and would have been miserable with three suitcases. They took the bags up by car and we boarded with a daypack. Chail was quieter than Kufri and I would give it the extra hour next time.

No complaints about the organisation at all. My only note is that the Kedarnath accommodation is genuinely basic — that is the reality up there and the itinerary does say so, but read it twice before you go. Everything else, including the Rudraprayag stop on the way back, was well judged.

The guided walk through the Latin quarter was far better than I expected — an hour and a half and we came away actually understanding the place. Dudhsagar was closed for the season when we went, which is clearly stated in the itinerary, but do check your dates.

Crossing from green Kullu into bare Lahaul in forty minutes is something else. Docking a star only because the paragliding at Solang is an extra you arrange yourself on the day — worth knowing so you carry cash for it.

We saw a herd of elephants at the water's edge about thirty minutes in. The earlier boats reportedly see much less. Eravikulam was shut for calving season when we went — it is in the exclusions, but I would have liked it flagged when we booked the dates.
