Shimla is a walking town, which is the whole appeal. The Mall and the Ridge are traffic-free, the church and the library are five minutes apart, and Jakhoo is a steep but short climb with a view over the whole valley.
We put you on the Kalka–Shimla toy train for the ascent — five hours, 102 tunnels, a UNESCO line — and take the luggage up by road so nobody is wrestling suitcases on a narrow-gauge carriage.
Kufri and Chail fill one day; the rest is deliberately loose. This is the easiest trip on our list and the one families book twice.

Board the narrow-gauge at Kalka mid-morning for the five-hour climb through 102 tunnels and 800-odd bridges. Transfer to the hotel, then an evening on the Ridge.
Drive 16 km to Kufri for the Himalayan Nature Park and the Green Valley viewpoint. Afternoon at the Indian Institute of Advanced Study — the old Viceregal Lodge — and Jakhoo temple at sunset.
A 45 km run to Chail — the palace, the deodar walks, and the cricket ground at 2,444 m. Lunch with your feet in the stream at Sadhupul. Evening free on the Mall.
Breakfast, checkout and the road transfer down to Kalka or Chandigarh, roughly three and a half hours.

The ascent is by the Kalka–Shimla narrow gauge; everything else is a private AC vehicle. Shimla's core is vehicle-free, so the hotel is chosen to be walkable to the Ridge.

Five hours on the toy train is lovely and would have been miserable with three suitcases. They took the bags up by car and we boarded with a daypack. Chail was quieter than Kufri and I would give it the extra hour next time.
