Manali is busy, and the trick is knowing where it is not. We stay in Old Manali rather than the Mall Road crush, start the Solang and Atal Tunnel day early enough to beat the queue at the tunnel mouth, and keep an afternoon free for the Hadimba deodar grove when the tour buses have gone.
The Atal Tunnel run takes you through to Sissu on the Lahaul side — a completely different landscape, bare and enormous, forty minutes from a green valley. In winter this is the trip's highlight; in summer it is the coolest half-day you will have.
Nothing here is a route march. Two sightseeing days, one river day, and enough unscheduled time that the trip belongs to you rather than to a clipboard.

Arrive by overnight coach or a Bhuntar flight transfer. Check in, rest, then an easy evening walk through Old Manali's cafés and the Manu temple.
06:30 start for the Atal Tunnel — 9 km under the Rohtang ridge — and out to Sissu on the Lahaul side for the waterfall and the Chandra river. Back through Solang in the afternoon for the ropeway and optional paragliding.
A slower day on the left bank. Naggar Castle, the Nicholas Roerich gallery, and lunch at Jana falls in a slate-roofed village kitchen. Evening at the Vashisht hot springs.
Late-morning visit to the Hadimba Devi temple once the coaches have gone, then Van Vihar and the Tibetan monastery. Afternoon free for the Mall Road, rafting on the Beas, or nothing at all.
Breakfast and checkout, with a transfer to the Volvo stand or Bhuntar airport. Kullu shawl workshops en route for anyone with time to spare.

A private AC vehicle throughout — a sedan for two, an Innova or Tempo Traveller for groups. The Atal Tunnel road is cleared year-round, but the Rohtang Pass itself needs a separate permit and is not included.

Crossing from green Kullu into bare Lahaul in forty minutes is something else. Docking a star only because the paragliding at Solang is an extra you arrange yourself on the day — worth knowing so you carry cash for it.

We nearly asked to be moved to a Mall Road hotel and I am so glad we did not. Walking back from the cafés along the river every evening was the best part of the holiday. The 06:30 start for the Atal Tunnel felt brutal at the time and completely correct by 09:00 when we saw the queue behind us.
