Kanchenjunga is the third-highest mountain on earth and from Tiger Hill it fills the horizon. That is a 04:00 start and it is worth every minute of it.
Darjeeling gives you tea — a full estate walk and tasting, not a gift-shop stop — the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, and the toy train's joy ride to Ghum. Then the road crosses into Sikkim for Gangtok, the Rumtek monastery and the drive up to Tsomgo lake.
Sikkim needs an Inner Line Permit and Tsomgo needs a further one. Both are arranged for you; you will need to carry photo ID and passport-size photographs.
Every day of the trip, with the hotel, the meals and the sightseeing written out. Nothing here is hidden behind a login.
Airport pick-up and the climb through Kurseong's tea gardens. Check in and settle. Evening walk on the Mall and Chowrasta.
04:00 departure for Tiger Hill and sunrise on Kanchenjunga. Ghum monastery and the Batasia Loop on the way back. After breakfast, a walk through the Happy Valley tea estate with a tasting.
Himalayan Mountaineering Institute and the Padmaja Naidu zoo — the only place in India breeding snow leopards. Afternoon joy ride on the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway to Ghum and back. Evening free.
Drive down to the Teesta and across into Sikkim, then up to Gangtok. Roughly four and a half hours. Evening on MG Marg, Gangtok's pedestrian high street.
Permit-controlled drive to Tsomgo lake at 3,753 m, then on to Baba Mandir. Yak rides at the lake for those who want them. Back to Gangtok by late afternoon.
Rumtek monastery in the morning, then the Do Drul Chorten, the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology and the Gangtok ropeway. Afternoon free for the Lall Market.
Early breakfast and the four-hour descent to Bagdogra or New Jalpaiguri. Flights after 14:00 are comfortable.

A private vehicle throughout. Sikkim's permit rules mean the vehicle changes at the Rangpo checkpost to a Sikkim-registered one; the handover is arranged and takes about twenty minutes.

Tiger Hill delivered — clear sky, the whole massif turning gold. But the part I did not expect to love was the Happy Valley walk. A proper estate tour with a tasting, not fifteen minutes and a gift shop. Both Sikkim permits were handled before we arrived and the vehicle changeover at Rangpo took twenty minutes exactly as described.

Half frozen at the edges and the sky reflecting off the rest of it. Worth the altitude headache. One tip: take the yak ride if you have children, skip it otherwise. The Rumtek morning was serene.
