Demanding — two long treks, sustained altitude
The Char Dham circuit covers roughly 1,600 kilometres of mountain road and two significant treks. Done badly it is an endurance test. Done properly it is eleven days with enough slack that a landslide or a weather day does not collapse the whole plan.
We follow the traditional clockwise order — Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, Badrinath — which is also the sensible one, because it raises you through the altitudes gradually. Each dham gets a full day rather than a hurried darshan between drives.
Registration for all four shrines, the Sonprayag biometric slot and the Badrinath queue token are handled before you land. Helicopter options at Kedarnath can be added, and we will tell you honestly when the weather makes them a poor bet.
Every day of the trip, with the hotel, the meals and the sightseeing written out. Nothing here is hidden behind a login.
Airport or station pick-up, hotel check-in, and a full kit briefing at 17:00 — this circuit needs proper footwear and layered clothing. Evening aarti at Har Ki Pauri.
Drive via Mussoorie and the Kempty falls road, descending into the Yamuna valley. About eight hours. Evening free.
Drive to Janki Chatti, then 6 km on foot or by pony to Yamunotri. Darshan, and rice cooked in the Surya Kund thermal spring. Return the same way.
A short driving day by this circuit's standards. Afternoon at Vishwanath temple and the Uttarkashi market. Rest is the point.
Early drive to Gangotri at 3,100 m through the Harsil valley. Darshan at the Ganga's source shrine, time at the Bhagirath Shila, and the drive back by evening.
The longest drive of the trip, roughly ten hours across the Mandakini watershed. We leave at 05:30 to reach before dark.
Sonprayag registration, shuttle to Gaurikund, then 16 km on foot, pony or palki. Helicopter from Phata available at extra cost. Evening aarti at the temple.
Darshan at first light, then the descent to Gaurikund and on to Guptkashi by road.
Drive via Joshimath and the Vishnuprayag confluence, climbing to Badrinath at 3,133 m. Evening aarti at the temple, and a dip at Tapt Kund for those who want it.
Morning darshan, then the 3 km run up to Mana — India's last village before Tibet — for Vyas Gufa and Bhim Pul. Afternoon drive down to Rudraprayag.
Final drive down the Alaknanda, arriving Haridwar by early afternoon. Drop at the station or on to Dehradun airport.

One dedicated vehicle for the entire eleven days — an Innova Crysta up to six travellers, a Tempo Traveller above that. The same driver stays with the group throughout, which matters on roads where local knowledge is the safety margin.

You go for the four dhams and come back talking about Mana. Vyas Gufa and the Saraswati emerging from under the rock — nobody had told us about any of it. Our driver had been on this route for nine seasons and it showed on the Uttarkashi–Guptkashi day.

My parents are both over seventy and this was the first Char Dham itinerary we found that did not try to do it in eight days. The short driving day to Uttarkashi was a gift. We lost half a day to a landslide near Rudraprayag and it did not derail anything, because the buffer was already there.
